PurpleAir Monitor Guide: Accuracy, Indoor Use and Alternatives

A PurpleAir monitor is best understood as a fast, local particle sensor—not a complete indoor-air laboratory and not an air purifier. It is particularly useful for tracking PM2.5 from wildfire smoke, wood smoke, cooking and other particle sources. Current PurpleAir outdoor-capable models use two laser particle counters, which provide redundant readings that can help reveal sensor problems.

For a Pacific Northwest home, PurpleAir is usually the strongest choice when the main question is, “How much smoke or fine-particle pollution is in the air right here?” Choose a broader indoor monitor such as Awair Element or IQAir AirVisual Pro when carbon dioxide, ventilation or volatile organic compounds matter as much as smoke.

Quick answer: is a PurpleAir monitor worth it?

PurpleAir is worth considering when you want hyperlocal, frequently updated PM2.5 readings at your home, school or business. It can show changes that a distant government station may not capture, especially when wildfire smoke varies by neighborhood, elevation or wind direction.

It is not the best single device for every indoor-air concern. PurpleAir does not directly measure carbon dioxide, radon or carbon monoxide. It also does not remove pollutants. If the reading rises, you still need an appropriate response: close windows during smoke, run effective filtration, use kitchen exhaust while cooking or investigate the source.

What PurpleAir actually measures

PurpleAir’s current Flex uses two Plantower PMS-6003 laser particle counters. The counters detect particles in several size channels and estimate particulate-matter concentrations, including PM2.5. The dual channels are useful because the device can compare two independent particle readings instead of relying on only one counter.

The Flex also contains a Bosch BME688 environmental sensor for temperature, relative humidity, pressure and gas-related data. Those secondary readings can provide context, but the product’s central purpose is particulate monitoring. PurpleAir’s published specifications identify both indoor and outdoor use, Wi-Fi cloud reporting and optional microSD logging; a microSD card and power supply may not be included, so check the exact package before buying. The Classic Plus likewise uses two laser particle counters and is intended for indoor or outdoor use. Model details differ, so do not assume every PurpleAir enclosure includes offline storage or the same environmental sensor. PurpleAir measures pollution; it does not purify air

Searchers sometimes call it a “PurpleAir purifier,” but PurpleAir devices are monitors. They sample air and report particle levels; they do not contain a HEPA filter that cleans a room.

If the monitor shows elevated PM2.5 indoors, the usual next step is source control plus filtration. During wildfire smoke, that can mean closing doors and windows, setting HVAC recirculation appropriately and running a correctly sized portable HEPA purifier. How accurate is PurpleAir?

PurpleAir is a low-cost optical sensor, not a regulatory monitor. Optical sensors infer particle mass from scattered light, so humidity, particle composition, smoke concentration, sensor aging and the selected conversion can affect the result. A reading should not be treated as a laboratory-grade measurement simply because it contains a precise number.

That does not make PurpleAir useless. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency evaluated PurpleAir sensors alongside regulatory instruments and developed a U.S.-wide correction equation. Corrected PurpleAir data now supplements permanent and temporary monitors on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map. The practical lesson is to compare like with like:

  • Use an appropriate correction or the corrected PurpleAir layer on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.
  • Use a meaningful time average. A one-minute spike from cooking is real local information, but it is not equivalent to a longer health-based exposure average.
  • Look for sustained patterns instead of reacting to a single momentary value.
  • Compare the two internal particle channels. A persistent large disagreement can indicate debris, insects, component wear or another sensor issue.
  • Use official AirNow and local-agency information for public health decisions during a smoke emergency.

PurpleAir map versus AirNow

The PurpleAir map emphasizes the PurpleAir sensor network and offers configurable averages, conversions and map layers. AirNow combines regulatory monitoring with quality-controlled and corrected sensor information for public smoke communication. Because the two interfaces can use different corrections and averaging periods, their numbers may not match at a given moment.

For exploring immediate neighborhood variation, the PurpleAir map is valuable. For health guidance during wildfire smoke, the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map is generally the easier reference because EPA and the U.S. Forest Service apply quality assurance and bias adjustments before displaying sensor data.

Indoor versus outdoor placement

Decide what question you want the sensor to answer before choosing a location.

Outdoor placement

An outdoor sensor helps answer whether smoke or other particle pollution is reaching your immediate area. Install an outdoor-capable model according to PurpleAir’s instructions, near power and Wi-Fi, where air can circulate freely. Avoid placing it directly beside a dryer vent, grill, chimney, idling vehicle, dusty workshop exhaust or another hyperlocal source unless measuring that source is the goal.

Indoor placement

An indoor sensor helps show how well the building envelope and filtration are protecting occupants. Place it in the occupied space you care about, away from a purifier’s clean-air outlet and away from cooking steam unless you specifically want to characterize cooking emissions. PurpleAir recommends a ventilated location rather than a closed cabinet or a space trapped between objects.

The most useful setup

For wildfire preparedness, paired indoor and outdoor sensors are especially informative. The outdoor reading shows the challenge; the indoor reading shows the protection your home is achieving. If outdoor PM2.5 climbs while indoor levels remain much lower, your closed-home and filtration strategy is working. If both rise together, check open windows, exhaust-fan operation, filter fit, purifier size and air leakage.

Public versus private PurpleAir data

During registration, an owner can designate a sensor as public or private. A public sensor appears on the public map, and its data can be available through PurpleAir’s public database and API. A private sensor is limited to the owner and people who have the necessary access information.

Choose deliberately. Do not use a home address or personally identifying name as the public sensor name. PurpleAir also notes that changing a previously public sensor to private affects new reporting but does not retroactively make previously public data private. Awair’s current support documentation says Element uses five main air factors: temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, total VOCs and PM2.5. That makes it useful when stale rooms, occupancy and chemical-source trends matter alongside particles. IQAir says the AirVisual Pro measures PM2.5, carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity and displays the data on the device. It can also compare indoor readings with outdoor information through its connected service. Which monitor should you choose?

  • Choose PurpleAir when PM2.5, wildfire smoke, a neighborhood-scale map or outdoor placement is the priority.
  • Choose Awair Element when you want one indoor dashboard for particles, CO2, humidity and broad VOC trends.
  • Choose IQAir AirVisual Pro when PM2.5 and CO2 are the priorities and you want a clear built-in screen.
  • Choose a dedicated radon monitor or test when radon is the concern. None of these three substitutes for radon testing.
  • Choose a listed carbon-monoxide alarm for life-safety CO detection. An air-quality monitor is not a replacement for required smoke and CO alarms.

How to use the readings to improve your air

A monitor earns its place only when its readings change your decisions. Establish a normal baseline over several clean-air days. Then watch what happens while cooking, burning candles, vacuuming, opening windows or running filtration. Change one thing at a time so the result is interpretable.

When PM2.5 rises indoors, remove or stop the particle source when possible, use local exhaust for cooking and run effective filtration. When CO2 rises but outdoor air is clean, increased ventilation may help. When outside smoke is severe, balance ventilation needs against particle exposure rather than opening windows automatically. PurpleAir is a strong specialist: it provides rapid, hyperlocal particle information and is particularly relevant to Pacific Northwest smoke season. It is not a purifier, a regulatory instrument or a complete detector for every indoor pollutant. Use corrected data, pay attention to sustained trends, place the sensor to answer a specific question and pair the reading with a real action.
